There are a number of different categories of intellectual property. For example, in the United States, we typically recognize four types of intellectual property: copyrights, trademarks, patents, and trade secrets. Now, within that scheme, there can be a variety of different ways to go about protecting or ensuring that your intellectual property is protected in the best possible manner. For example, if you have a trademark, one of the things you may want to do is register the trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and also with the state trademark office. On the other hand, if you have a trade secret, you might want to reach out to an attorney to talk about how to protect a trade secret because obviously, you don’t want to register and open your trade secret to the public. But there are ways that you can protect it nonetheless.
